It sure feels like we are superheroes in kindergarten... learning to read is a pretty cool thing! We made this anchor chart to show off all of our amazing *reading superpowers*!

Some of my prekinders are totally ready to start reading, but I'm not sure where to go next with them since it's not in the curriculum (and I've only taught 6th graders before!) Any advice/good resources I should check out Karen?

ReplyDeleteWow, you took quite a jump, huh? from 6th to Pre-K is crazy! I went from 3-4-5 for 8 years to Kindergarten 2 years ago and it was a huge deal. I can imagine yours was an even bigger shocker!
I would say, if they know their letter sounds, start with having them learn some sight words. I, like, the, can, a, am, -- those are the ones I always start with because then it leads well to emergent reading... stuff like "I like ___" or "I can ___" After we know all our consonant sounds, I go to short and long vowels, because those are like the *glue* that put words together! You could start with some easy short vowel word families -at, -in, -ed, etc. and use magnetic letters to make words by changing the initial consonant. I hope you can use some of those pointers-- that's how I have been teaching my kinders to read and they are really taking off!
